The Harwich School Benefits from the HPH ‘Dock School Programme’

The Harwich School is celebrating a sizeable donation of £2,730, from the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) ‘Dock School Programme’.

HPH, the parent company of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of Harwich International Port, run a the scheme in which schools ‘adopted’ by a HPH Port, become a ‘Dock School’ and enjoy a special, yet mutually-beneficial relationship.

The donation is being used to buy software to use with their interactive “smart boards” technology. They will be used in conjunction with ‘Science 2006’, a new double GCSE scheme being implemented nationally in schools which means all pupils will study more Science. In addition, data logging equipment will be purchased.

Paul Davey, HPUK’s Corporate Affairs Manager, said: “The HPH Dock Schools Programme gives our ports the chance to ‘adopt’ and support local schools, and it allows the schools to benefit from links with one of the area’s biggest employers. We are delighted to be in a position to make this donation to the Harwich School, and we hope that their students find the purchases useful and fun to use.”

Nigel Mountford, Acting Headteacher of the Harwich School, commented: “We are extremely grateful to HPH and Harwich International Port for giving us this fantastic donation. Hundreds of students over the next few years are going to benefit hugely from this new innovative technology. We are delighted to have become a ‘Dock School’. We will continue to be ambitious in working with local employers to support our students. We have excellent students who deserve the best.”

Steve Sones, Head of Science, gratefully received the cheque and commented that the special software is incredibly powerful and will help continue raising standards of achievement. “We have achieved record levels of success this year with Year 9 who will start the new GCSE course next year. The future looks very bright and the students will enjoy using the new equipment.”

The donations have also been made under the Dock School programme to Fairfield Infants School and Colneis Junior School in Felixstowe.
