Harwich International Port has welcomed the first call of a new chartered roll-on/roll-off vessel, the 'Victoria VI', for Euromed Maritime Limited, of London. The vessel will upgrade the liner service between Harwich and the Port of Famagusta, in Cyprus, with a regular sailing.
The Victoria VI, registered in Panama, is 102.5 metres long, and has a trailer capacity of 65, as well as space for 290 standard-sized cars. The vessel will sail from Harwich every 25-30 days.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of Harwich International Port, commented:
“Euromed’s commitment to this route enhances Harwich International Port’s position as an important gateway to the Mediterranean. Shippers can now take advantage of an upgraded, regular service for transporting goods to and from this important region.”
The vessel has been chartered by Harvest Shipping Services Limited, who have been exclusive chartering agents for Euromed Maritime Limited since the early 1990s.
Mike Holmes, Managing Director of Harvest Shipping Services Limited, said:
“Harwich is an ideal port for serving the heart of England, and its location close to London is attractive, especially for clients importing cargoes in preparation for the Olympics in 2012.”
Mr. Holmes added:
“During the past few years, Euromed business has grown steadily, and this latest development is an opportunity to attract new import cargoes from the Eastern Mediterranean countries.”
Euromed previously operated a general cargo service out of the Port of Felixstowe, which transferred to Harwich International Port in 2001, and subsequently made a strategic change to ro/ro cargoes.
