Harwich International Port is celebrating the second boost for its cruise line business in nearly as many weeks after receiving a major industry-award as a cruise turnaround port.
The Essex port was named runner-up in the category for the best turnaround port at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards, held recently in Hamburg, Germany. The award is presented to the port which has made the most significant improvements to its turnaround facilities or cruise-tourism infrastructure over the past 12 months.
The award follows closely on the heels of a ceremony held in early September to officially inaugurate a new state-of-the-art passenger gangway at the leading cruise port.
Commenting on the awards, David Gledhill, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, the owners of Harwich International Port, said:
“This honour recognises not only the hard work of all our staff at the port, and the significant investments we have made in upgrading the passenger facilities at Harwich, but also the growing reputation of Harwich within the cruise industry. The turnaround sector is very competitive, and this award gives us a significant boost in attracting additional operators to the facility.
“Harwich also has a key strategic location for turnaround calls. It is well located to slot easily into cruise ship itineraries for North European, Baltic or Norwegian fjord cruises. It also has ample parking facilities for passengers arriving by car and, almost uniquely, a mainline train station integrated into the cruise terminal.”
The Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards are the leading awards for the sector and attract entries from around the world.
