Harwich International Port Awarded Prestigious Five-Star Safety Rating
31st January 2005

Harwich International Port (HIP) has been awarded the British Safety Council’s (BSC) prestigious Five-Star Award, following an extensive audit of the facility in early December 2004.

HIP achieved an impressive 4,345 points out of a total of 4,600 for the effectiveness of its safety management practices, giving it an overall score of 94.46%. This places it in the highly respected five-star “Excellent” category.

The primary aim of this audit was to provide an independent external assessment of the safety management systems developed by the Port, and the effectiveness of their implementation. The audit covers 82 separate elements – from risk assessments to fire routes, First Aid provisions to emergency planning – within eight core areas - from safety organisation to continuous improvement - and crosschecks systems in place throughout the whole of the organisation, evaluating their effectiveness and providing feedback.

David Gledhill, Chief Operating Officer of Harwich International Port, said of the award:

“This is an excellent achievement by Harwich International Port, in what is sometimes thought of as a high-risk industry. Significantly, HIP has also achieved a 30% reduction in reportable accidents over the last year, which is testament to the continued commitment of all our staff to training initiatives and general safety awareness at the Port.”

He added:

“A safe and efficient workplace benefits both the Port, its customers and its employees, and we are dedicated to the promotion of good safety management systems across the whole of our business. Furthermore, whilst we are extremely proud of the safety culture we have built up over the years at HIP, our ultimate target must be a 100% safety rating, and we will use the BSC’s assessment as a benchmark so that we may further improve on our current high standard”.
