Initial topographical survey work has commenced at Bathside Bay. Surveyors from Randall Surveys of Bures, near Sudbury, have been clearly visible on site in their bright yellow safety coats with their survey equipment.
The four-week survey represents the first stage of on-site works at Bathside Bay. It will provide Harwich International Port with the first detailed mapping of the site, including all surface features and ground levels, since the initial reclamation works were undertaken in the mid 1980’s. The topographical survey will be followed by a marine and land geological survey.
Commenting on the work Andrew Harston, General Manager of Harwich International Port, said:
“The process to obtain permissions to develop Bathside Bay will take some time but it is great to see some early signs of progress. The information we get from these surveys will help us prepare detailed design concepts for the new terminal. The new terminal will provide hundreds of much needed new jobs and an economic boost for the whole region. It is therefore especially gratifying that we were able to award the contract for this work to a local company.”
Bathside Bay adjoins Harwich International Port, and is being developed as a new container facility within the Harwich Haven ports area, which already includes the UK’s largest container port at Felixstowe. When complete the Bathside Bay terminal will boast 1,400 metres of quay and provide 500 new jobs at the port plus many more in associated industries.
