24th March 2006
Staff from the Port of Felixstowe, the UK’s biggest port, will today be showing their support for ‘Spring Clean Suffolk’ by donning their gloves and collecting litter at the Port’s Trinity Terminal.
‘Spring Clean Suffolk’, a weeklong initiative spearheaded by the Suffolk Agricultural Association and the High Sheriff of Suffolk, Phillip Hope-Cobbold, aims to clean up the county, between 20th and 26th March. Last year, around Suffolk, over 1,400 volunteers collected 2,300 black sacks full of rubbish, and the organisers are hoping for more of the same this time around.
The Port of Felixstowe has a good track record in maintaining its duty of care to the environment. The Port’s Environmental Policy seeks to reduce to a minimum the ecological impact of its activities and seek ways to conserve natural resources.
Following a recent survey of drivers using Trinity Terminal, the Port has also undertaken to provide dedicated litter collection facilities at the in-gates, with the aim of improving the overall cleanliness and appearance of the Terminal.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of the Port of Felixstowe, commented:
“No port is more committed to being a good neighbour than Felixstowe. We go to significant lengths to ensure our environment stays healthy and that the area remains a nice place to live. We are dedicated to keeping the Port as clean and as waste-free as possible, and are happy to be joining in ‘Spring Clean Suffolk’.”
The litter-pick will focus on the in-gates at Trinity Terminal, which handle, on average, 4,000 lorries each day.
