Harwich International Port celebrates agreement with Voyages of Discovery

25th May 2006

Harwich International Port is celebrating an extension to its contract with cruise firm Voyages of Discovery. The cruise specialists have been working with Harwich International since 1999, and the flagship vessel, the MV Discovery, is commencing its fourth season sailing from the port. This new agreement will secure the relationship for a further five-years, until 2010.

Voyages of Discovery are well known for their high standards and varied cruise locations. Passengers are taken on board the 4-star MV Discovery to exotic destinations around the globe.

The MV Discovery was purchased by Voyages of Discovery’s parent company in 2005. She is 20,000 tonnes and operates cruises from the UK (Harwich) from May to September and departs for the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Red Sea before cruising the Atlantic to Havana and on through the Panama Canal to Galapagos and Antarctica via Chilean Fjords. She will return to Harwich in May 2007 having visited Easter Island, Pitcairn and Tahiti.

In October 2005, a second berth was made available at Harwich International Port to accommodate the record number of cruise calls, and the record number of passengers expected through the port in the 2006 season.

Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of Harwich International Port said:

“It is testament to the excellent relationship between the two companies that Voyages of Discovery have extended their contract with us. Having one of the leading cruise firms sail from Harwich cements our place in the cruise industry as a major player. We are committed to building on our reputation and ensuring we remain a number one port for the travel industry”

Roger Allard, Chairman of Voyages of Discovery added:

“We have been working closely with Harwich International Port since 1999 and each year our business has grown. Our customers enjoy using the facilities Harwich has to offer.”

He further noted:

“Not only does Harwich cater for our customers who have a leisurely drive to the UK’s most easterly cruise port, but it is significantly closer to our northern destinations such as the Baltic, Norwegian Fjords and Greenland in cruising time, which allows for a more encompassing itinerary. We have always found the management and staff at Harwich very customer focused and they provide an excellent service. This five year agreement will further cement what has already been an extremely good working relationship.”

The first sailing from Harwich will be the MV Discovery, which will depart on 27th May 06.
